Tool 7
To script or not to script?
You may not actually want to speak from a script, but many people
like to write one in the early stages of preparing for a presentation or
speaking engagement. It can then be put into note form as an aide-memoire. Some
people have to create a script because it will later be published or made
available as a discussion paper. Many would never dream of writing a script,
but use a variety of other methods to organise their presentation.
Whatever your preference, there is one group
of people for whom a good 'script' is essential - your audience.
A script provides structure.
Structuring your script / presentation is probably the most important
element of all your preparation. It guides your listeners through
the information you are giving. It helps them focus on what is important
and needs to be remembered. It lets them know when they can relax.
It puts an end to confusion and lets them know they are in safe
hands.
The Good News For
almost as long as humans have been talking, the same structuring techniques
have been used. In fact today's scriptwriters use the same devices as the Greek
orator Cicero (160-43 BC)!
Learn a trick or two
On our communication and presentation courses we will tell you about some
of these devices. They are invaluable tools to help your message have more
impact. If you present regularly or speak in public we can give you all the
tips you need to leave 'em wanting more!
